1. Introduction to Simplex and Duplex Filter Housings

For industrial liquid polishing applications, the high flow filter cartridge installed inside the water filter housing is responsible for intercepting fine particles and colloids. Simplex filter and duplex filter are two mainstream housing structures to accommodate these filter elements. A simplex filter contains only one filter chamber, which means the whole pipeline flow has to be shut down when replacing cartridges or filter bags. In contrast, duplex filters consist of two parallel filter chambers controlled by a diverter valve. Operators can switch fluid flow to the standby chamber, isolate the fouled side for maintenance, and keep the whole production system running without interruption. This core distinction decides their suitability for different production modes and becomes the key factor in project filtration design.

2. Working Principle of Simplex Filter and Duplex Filter

2.1 Simplex Filter

The simplex filter is a single-chamber filter housing, available for cartridge filter or bag filter installation. Process liquid flows into the chamber, passes through the filter cartridge or filter bag, and contaminants are trapped on the filter media. When the differential pressure rises to the preset value, the system needs to stop pumping, close the inlet and outlet valves, release internal pressure, open the housing cover and replace the consumables. After cleaning or cartridge replacement, operators close the cover, reset valves and restart the pipeline. All maintenance work must be carried out under offline status. Common types: single-cartridge housing, multi-cartridge simplex housing, single-bag filter housing.

2.2 Duplex Filter

The duplex filter adopts a dual-chamber parallel structure equipped with a special switching diverter valve. Normally, one chamber works online while the other stands by. When the operating chamber reaches the terminal differential pressure, the operator turns the diverter valve, and the fluid flow is smoothly diverted to the standby filter chamber. At this stage, the fouled chamber can be isolated, drained, opened for cartridge replacement or internal cleaning. The whole switching process takes only a few seconds and does not cut off the main process flow. After maintenance, the cleaned chamber becomes the new standby unit for the next switching cycle. The interlock design of the diverter valve prevents both chambers from being cut off at the same time, avoiding accidental flow interruption.

3. Advantages and Limitations

3.1 Simplex Filter

Advantages

Lower initial procurement cost, fewer components and simple structure.

Small footprint, easy to install on auxiliary pipelines, sampling lines and low-flow branches.

Simple operation and inspection, fewer vulnerable parts, low failure rate.

Flexible matching: compatible with PP, PES, PTFE high flow filter cartridge and filter bags of different sizes.

Limitations

Mandatory shutdown for cartridge replacement or cleaning, which cannot satisfy continuous production requirements.

Frequent clogging will bring repeated production stops and raise overall production loss.

Not suitable for core process pipelines where fluid interruption may cause product scrapping or damage downstream membranes.

3.2 Duplex Filter

Advantages

True continuous filtration, no shutdown during filter element replacement, ideal for non-stop production lines.

Flexible switching mode, stable pressure transition during valve switching, less impact on downstream instruments and membranes.

Can be customized with sanitary grade 316L duplex stainless steel for corrosive medium such as brine and seawater.

Widely recognized in lithium material liquid, pharmaceutical purified water, chemical solvent and RO feed water polishing.

Limitations

Higher upfront investment cost than simplex filter with the same filtration capacity.

Larger installation space, extra space reserved for valve operation and housing maintenance.

The diverter valve and sealing surface need regular inspection to prevent internal leakage and bypass.

Not necessary for low-frequency maintenance pipelines, which will cause redundant investment.

4. Key Selection Criteria

4.1 Production continuity requirement

If the process cannot tolerate any shutdown, such as lithium battery wet process, seawater desalination RO feed water, chemical continuous synthesis pipeline: choose duplex filter. For intermittent batch production, auxiliary pump protection, sampling pipeline and equipment bypass: simplex filter is more cost-effective.

4.2 Flow rate and consumable replacement frequency

High flow and fast fouling, frequent cartridge replacement: duplex filter is recommended. Low flow, stable water quality, long service cycle of filter cartridges: simplex filter can fully meet the demand.

4.3 Medium characteristics and product quality risk

For high-value materials such as lithium carbonate liquid, pharmaceutical solvent, any flow interruption may lead to batch waste. Duplex filter avoids this risk. For general circulating water, auxiliary cooling water with low economic loss caused by short shutdown: simplex filter is acceptable.

4.4 Budget and site space condition

Tight budget, limited floor area, enough planned maintenance window: simplex filter. Long-term operation priority, reducing production loss, available installation space: duplex filter.

4.5 Matching with upstream coarse filtration

Whether simplex or duplex filter is selected, they are usually used as polishing filtration behind coarse equipment such as self-cleaning filters or basket strainers. The upstream coarse filter intercepts large sediment and debris, reducing the fouling speed of downstream high flow filter cartridge inside the water filter housing.

Our engineering team evaluates the production schedule, flow and fluid property of the project, and recommends the most economical housing configuration instead of simply pursuing duplex structure. Many new energy and desalination clients have replaced imported filter housings with LEFILTER simplex and duplex filtration packages, achieving stable operation with lower total ownership cost.

7. Conclusion

Duplex filter and simplex filter have their own positioning in industrial filtration. Simplex filter is a simple, economical choice for discontinuous pipelines and auxiliary systems. Duplex filter solves the pain point of shutdown maintenance, which is the core equipment to realize continuous polishing filtration. When matched with proper water filter housing and high flow filter cartridge, they can form stable fine filtration protection for membrane systems and core production equipment. As continuous manufacturing standards keep improving, duplex filters are increasingly adopted in lithium, desalination and chemical industries, while simplex filters still occupy an irreplaceable position in auxiliary and low-batch filtration scenarios. LEFILTER keeps optimizing the structural design of filter housings to meet diversified continuous and intermittent filtration demands from global industrial clients.

FAQ

Q1: Can duplex filter automatically clean filter cartridges?

A: No. The duplex filter only realizes flow switching. After switching, the dirty chamber still needs manual cartridge replacement or cleaning. It is different from self-cleaning filters with built-in brush or suction scanner.

Q2: Can simplex filter be modified into duplex filter later?

A: It is not recommended to modify on site. If continuous operation may be required in the future, it is better to reserve pipeline interface and directly select duplex filter at the initial design stage.

Q3: What is the common material for duplex filter housing?

A: 316L stainless steel is the mainstream for water treatment and general chemical conditions. Duplex stainless steel is selected for high chloride brine and strong corrosive medium.

Q4: Is the pressure fluctuation obvious during duplex filter switching?

A: With qualified diverter valve and proper operation, the pressure fluctuation is small and will not impact downstream RO membrane. Low-quality valve products may cause water hammer and pressure shock.

Q5: Can duplex filter use high flow filter cartridge?

A: Yes. LEFILTER duplex housing can be customized to fit high flow filter cartridges, which greatly reduces the number of elements and simplifies maintenance work.
