Manganese Sand Filter | Manganese Greensand Water Treatment Filter

Introduction:Manganese sand filter is a key pretreatment equipment for water purification systems, widely paired with high flow filter cartridge, water filter housing and other pipeline filtration units to remove suspended solids, iron, manganese, colloids and organic contaminants from raw water. It stabilizes inlet water quality for subsequent RO, ion exchange and other water treatment processes, lowering the burden of downstream filtration and extending the service life of precision filter elements.

Product Introduction

This manganese sand filter adopts manganese greensand as the main filter media. Multiple tank material options are available, including PE, rubber-lined steel, steel with plastic coating, epoxy anti-corrosion steel and stainless steel. As a robust mechanical filter for water pretreatment, it works together with high flow filter cartridge, water filter housing in the whole filtration loop to capture impurities and reduce iron and manganese content in groundwater and surface water. The optimized tank and media design enables adaptive operation: the filter bed automatically forms an upper loose, lower compact structure during filtration to guarantee stable outlet water quality. During backwashing, the filter media fully expands and disperses for thorough cleaning.

Working Principle

Manganese Sand Filter | Manganese Greensand Water Treatment Filter

Raw water enters the tank from the top inlet and flows downward through the manganese sand media layer. Manganese greensand has strong catalytic oxidation performance, which converts soluble ferrous iron and divalent manganese in water into insoluble ferric hydroxide and manganese dioxide precipitates. These precipitates, together with suspended solids, colloids and organic pollutants, are trapped in the filter bed. When the pressure difference rises to the set value, the backwashing procedure starts. Reverse upward water flow fluidizes the manganese sand layer to flush out intercepted sludge and oxides out of the drain pipeline, restoring the filter capacity for continuous operation.

FAQ

Q1: What contaminants can a manganese sand filter remove?

A: It mainly removes iron, manganese, suspended particles, colloids, partial organic substances and residual pesticides in raw water, and reduces water turbidity effectively.

Q2: How often does backwashing need to be performed?

A: The backwash cycle depends on raw water quality. It can be triggered by pressure difference or set time automatically, usually once every 8–24 hours.

Q3: Can it work together with RO systems?

A: Yes, it is commonly used as the front pretreatment of reverse osmosis systems to remove iron and manganese which can cause irreversible fouling of RO membranes.

Q4: Is the filter media replaceable?

A: Manganese greensand needs to be replenished or replaced regularly after long-term operation when its catalytic capacity declines.

Q5: Manual and automatic types, which one is better?

A: Automatic backwash models are recommended for large-volume continuous water treatment projects; manual types are cost-effective for small flow on-site use.
