In pharmaceutical manufacturing, water is the most widely used raw material, and its purity is strictly regulated by international standards. Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes play a vital role in this industry by providing a cold sterilization method that removes bacteria, viruses, and pyrogens without the need for heat or chemicals. The construction of UF systems in pharmaceutical plants often involves hollow fiber membranes made from high-purity polymers. Beyond biological removal, UF membranes serve as an excellent pre-treatment for secondary reverse osmosis stages. By removing colloids and organic macromolecules that can foul RO membranes, UF significantly extends the life of the entire water treatment train. This dual-membrane approach (UF followed by RO) is considered the state-of-the-art for pharmaceutical water systems, as it provides multiple layers of security against both chemical and biological impurities.
