Product Introduction
This quartz sand filter, equipped with sturdy water filter housing, can be built as an automatic self-cleaning filter for water purification. It uses quartz sand as filter media, which can efficiently remove suspended solids in water and deliver remarkable removal performance on colloids, iron, organic matter and other pollutants. It features low filtration resistance, large specific surface area, strong acid and alkali resistance, anti-oxidation capacity, and adapts to pH range from 2 to 13. Benefiting from optimized media filling and tank design, it supports automatic operation and adapts well to changes of raw water concentration and working conditions. During filtration, the sand bed naturally forms an upper-loose and lower-dense structure to guarantee stable outlet water quality. When backwashing starts, the filter media expands and disperses thoroughly for thorough cleaning. It also owns the strengths of fast filtration speed, high filtration precision and large dirt holding capacity. It is widely applied in power, electronics, beverage, tap water, petroleum, chemical, metallurgy, textile, paper-making, food, swimming pool and municipal engineering industries for process water, domestic water, circulating water and wastewater pretreatment.
Working Principle

Raw water flows into the tank from the top water distributor and passes downwards through the quartz sand bed. Suspended particles, colloids and iron compounds are intercepted and trapped inside the sand layer. Clear water is collected by the bottom water collection device and flows out of the filter. As contaminants accumulate in the media bed, the pressure drop gradually rises. When the preset differential pressure or running time is reached, the backwash cycle activates. Backwash water (or air-water combined backwash) flows upward to fluidize and scrub the quartz sand, stripping trapped sludge out of the filter media. The sewage is drained away. Once backwashing completes, the system switches back to normal filtration mode.

Structure Form
The quartz sand filter mainly consists of tank body, water distribution assembly, water collection assembly, external piping, valves and sampling instrument ports. The inlet distributor adopts top inlet and baffle water distribution design. The water collector is available with porous plate water cap assembly or arched porous plate plus supporting layer structure. External piping is pre-fitted with matched valves and pressure sampling ports for convenient on-site installation and stable operation.
Core Advantages

Self-adaptive sand bed structure, stable outlet turbidity, excellent protection for RO and ultrafiltration membranes.
Two optional backwash modes: single water wash or air-water combined backwash, cleaning effect is thorough.
High filtration velocity and large dirt holding capacity, long running cycle between backwashes.
Compact structure, easy installation and maintenance, available in manual, semi-auto and fully automatic control versions.
Low operation cost, only consumes 1~3% product water for backwashing.
Application Scenarios
Raw water pretreatment: river, lake, well water and tap water purification for removing sediment and suspended substances.
Industrial process water: power plant, electronics, beverage, food, chemical and paper-making production water treatment.
Circulating water treatment for metallurgy, textile and petrochemical industries, preventing pipeline and heat exchanger fouling.
Municipal water supply and swimming pool, water park water filtration.
Wastewater reuse pretreatment for zero-discharge water projects.
FAQ
Q1: What is the standard outlet turbidity of the quartz sand filter?
A: The outlet turbidity can stay below 3 FTU when the inlet turbidity is less than 20 FTU.
Q2: Which backwash mode is better, water wash or air-water combined backwash?
A: Air-water combined backwash has stronger scouring effect, which is preferred for water with high sludge content. Simple water washing is enough for clean raw water.
Q3: How long is the service life of quartz sand media?
A: Normally quartz sand can run for 2–3 years. Replace it if hardening, mud ball formation or obvious turbidity breakthrough occurs.
Q4: Can this filter be installed before reverse osmosis system?
A: Yes, it is one of the most common pretreatment filters for RO systems to reduce suspended solids and extend membrane lifespan.
Q5: What control options can be supplied?
A: Manual valve control, semi-automatic and fully automatic PLC differential-pressure control are all available.
