Multi-media Filter for Raw Water Pretreatment & Industrial Circulating Water

Introduction:The multi-media filter is a widely adopted mechanical depth filtration equipment for industrial water treatment. It adopts layered filter media to trap suspended solids, silt and algae, delivering stable pre-treatment performance for RO systems, heat exchange loops and irrigation projects. It can work together with water filter housing and backwashing control modules to realize long-period stable running.

Product Introduction

This multi-media filter, built with robust water filter housing, can be configured into a self-cleaning filter system with automatic backwash function. It refers to the mechanical filter tank filled with two or more kinds of filter media. Common filter materials include anthracite, ceramsite, quartz sand and activated carbon. It usually combines two or multiple filter layers, which makes full use of advantages from different media. It features strong dirt holding capacity, low head loss and excellent filtration efficiency. Multiple material options are available for the tank body: 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel and Q235(A3) carbon steel. Anti-corrosion treatment choices contain epoxy coating, rubber lining and FRP lining. Multiple water distribution structures are optional for upper and lower distributors, such as basket strainers, baffle plates, manifold pipes, stainless pipe water distributors, flat water caps and arched plates. The available size range covers Φ200mm to Φ3500mm to satisfy different flow demands.

Working Principle

Raw water flows into the filter tank from the top inlet and passes through the layered filter media from top to bottom. Larger particles are trapped by lighter, coarse media at the upper layer, while fine impurities are intercepted by dense quartz sand at the bottom layer. Suspended solids, sediment, colloids and algae are gradually captured inside the media bed. With the accumulation of contaminants, the pressure difference between inlet and outlet increases. When the differential pressure reaches the set value or the scheduled running time is up, the backwash process starts automatically. Backwash water flows reversely from the bottom of the tank to expand and scrub the filter bed, stripping trapped impurities out of the media. Wastewater is discharged out of the tank. After backwashing finishes, the filter returns to normal filtration mode.

Technical Parameters

Core Advantages

Layered multi-media design, graded interception, large dirt holding capacity and long filtration cycle.

Flexible tank material and anti-corrosion selections, suitable for clean water, slightly corrosive raw water and seawater.

Multiple upper and lower water distributor structures for uniform water distribution, avoiding short flow and media loss.

Low head loss during operation, reduces energy consumption of front pumps.

Manual, semi-automatic and fully automatic backwash modes are optional for different automation requirements.

Wide flow range, applicable for small skid-mounted pretreatment and large-scale industrial circulating water projects.

Application Scenarios

1. Industrial process water filtration:

steel plant oxygen lance water, boiler and heat exchanger water supply filtration, to remove impurities and prevent blockage of pipelines and nozzles.

Industrial circulating water filtration system.

2. Raw water pretreatment:

surface river water, lake water, reservoir water, well water and municipal tap water, removing sediment, suspended solids, algae and organic substances.

3. Agricultural irrigation:

farmland, parks and golf course irrigation for water sources with high impurity content.

Pre-treatment for food processing, paper making, power plant circulating water, industrial & medical pure water production, industrial water recycling and wastewater treatment.

Aquaculture, swimming pool and water park water treatment.

FAQ

Q1: What filter media can be filled in the multi-media filter?

A: Standard combinations are anthracite + quartz sand. We also support ceramsite and activated carbon according to customer water quality.

Q2: Can this multi-media filter be equipped with automatic backwash?

A: Yes. We can match pneumatic valves, differential pressure transmitters and PLC control cabinet to realize automatic backwashing.

Q3: What’s the difference between carbon steel and stainless steel tank?

A: Carbon steel with epoxy coating is cost-effective for normal fresh water. Stainless steel is chosen for corrosive water such as brackish water and seawater.

Q4: How often do we need to replace the filter media?

A: Normally quartz sand and anthracite can be used for 2–3 years. Replace them when serious hardening or mud ball phenomenon appears.

Q5: Is this filter used before RO membrane system?

A: It is the classic pretreatment equipment for RO systems, widely used to reduce suspended solids and protect downstream RO membranes.
